Consumer habits won't snap back to how they were before COVID. So why are some organizations still clinging to outdated supply chain methods?

The question applies everywhere, from ocean freight booking to the warehouse dock, where many teams still coordinate trucks by phone and email instead of with [dock scheduling software](https://opendock.com/en/products/dock-scheduling/). [Roberta Tamburrino](https://www.linkedin.com/in/roberta-tamburrino-3161861/), SVP of Logistics Operations at [INXEPTION](https://inxeption.com/) at the time of recording, explains how technology changes logistics challenges and shares what she's learned about women in logistics and improving the industry's existing methods.

Join us as we discuss:

- Revitalizing workflows in supply chains.
- How supply chains are like spider webs.
- The importance of mentorship, and more.

## Why Do Ocean Freight Problems Need a Shared Solution?

Ocean freight inefficiencies affect nearly every business, so INXEPTION builds tools other companies can plug into instead of solving the problem just for itself. Almost no industry goes untouched by international freight, and ocean shipping plays a part in the supply chain of most U.S. businesses.

Ocean freight is heavily used, but it's also riddled with inefficiencies and systemic problems. During the pandemic, shutdowns, surging demand, and wider supply chain struggles exposed those issues. Rather than fixing them for INXEPTION alone, Roberta and her team focused on building a solution any partner or user could plug into.

*"We look at the problem and say, 'There's a way we can solve this through tech. **Let's figure out the best way.**'" (Roberta Tamburrino)*

INXEPTION's advantage comes from the simplicity and constant evolution of its product. As Roberta puts it, "There's always another layer, another issue, another tweak, another feature."

By continuously improving the overall system, the company builds a stronger network by offering solutions to other freight forwarders. It's a similar idea to what our first guest described about [tailoring automation to large-scale operations](https://blog.opendock.com/tailoring-automation-to-large-scale-operations-whats-up-dock-podcast-episode-1?hsLang=en): the technology keeps improving as it learns how the work really flows.

## How Is the Rise of Women in Logistics Changing the Industry?

More women are moving into logistics leadership, and that shift has coincided with a wave of new approaches to old supply chain problems. Women in logistics leadership were rare a decade ago. Today, many head large departments and companies.

As customer needs change, the technology used to meet them has to change too. You can't fix modern struggles with decades-old solutions, whether that's a legacy ocean freight system or a warehouse gate still running on paper sign-in sheets instead of digital [driver check-in](https://opendock.com/en/products/driver-check-in/).

*"I would look at some of these technologies in a fresh light to say, 'Are they still relevant? **Are they still what this supply chain needs?** How do we move forward?'" (Roberta Tamburrino)*

Not every system can be uprooted, though. Organizations have to balance consistency with improvement, and new designs need to stay relevant and usable. Rather than chasing flashy software updates and minor changes, Roberta favors building genuinely new technologies that move the industry forward, which starts with understanding the industry deeply.

## How Can Newcomers Break Into Logistics?

Newcomers break into logistics fastest through mentorship and industry education, and Roberta encourages leaders to make both easier to find. Jumping into logistics from tech can feel intimidating, but it's far from impossible. With a quarter century of experience, Roberta credits much of her career to direct experience and the people who mentored her.

*"Mentorship is really important in this space because there is **so much to learn.** I did not learn all of this in utero, no one does." (Roberta Tamburrino)*

Beyond finding a mentor, Roberta points to a few ways to learn the industry:

- Industry conferences. The [Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP)](https://www.cscmp.org/) runs education-focused events covering everything from foundational practices to new technologies.
- Free online training. With the shift to remote and hybrid work, free training videos on YouTube have exploded, offering a quick look at how organizations run their processes.
- Reaching out directly. Most industry leaders want to fill logistics with great people and are willing to help shape the next generation.

Learning from experienced partners is a theme across the series. In [episode three, Uponor's Tom Rowbotham](https://blog.opendock.com/you-cannot-win-and-thats-a-good-thing?hsLang=en) explains why good partnerships are indispensable, and in our [episode on the logistics of beer](https://blog.opendock.com/the-logistics-of-beer?hsLang=en), the National Beer Wholesalers Association's Lester Jones shares how an entire industry works together to keep product moving.

Roberta's path from tech into logistics is a reminder that fresh perspectives, paired with a willingness to learn from others, are what move an entire industry forward.
